Our History


Sterling Capital Management LLC is a registered investment advisor founded in 1970. Sterling is dedicated to providing clients with outstanding service in achieving their investment goals. By delivering on this commitment, the firm has grown to serve many sophisticated individual and institutional investors.

With $55 billion in assets under management as of 03/31/2018, Sterling has the capabilities, credentials and focus designed to solve our clients’ most complex investment needs.

Sterling’s private client group originated from the firm’s success in serving sophisticated institutional investors. Our interaction with national and international consultants, corporations, foundations and Governmental pension plans has provided us experience and insight to better serve affluent individuals and families. The private client group was strengthened with the addition of Washington, D.C. based de Garmo & Kelleher in 2010. Our sole mission is to appropriately manage our clients’ assets to meet their goals and objectives.

Sterling is an independent subsidiary of BB&T Corporation, one of the nation's largest financial services holding companies.

Our headquarters are in Charlotte, N.C., with offices in Raleigh, N.C.; Atlanta, GA.; Washington, D.C.; Richmond, VA; Virginia Beach, VA; Philadelphia, PA and San Francisco, Calif.

Stewart M. Boswell

Stewart M. Boswell, Senior Managing Director

Stewart M. Boswell, Senior Managing Director, joined Sterling Capital Management in 2009 and has investment experience since 1984.  Stewart has overall responsibility for Sterling’s Private Client Group.  He was previously founder and managing partner of Boswell Associates, a private equity firm based in Charlotte.  Prior to the formation of Boswell Associates, he served as managing director and global head of middle market mergers and acquisitions at Banc of America Securities. Before the formation of Banc of America Securities, he was responsible for mergers & acquisitions at its predecessor, NationsBanc Montgomery Securities, where he integrated the Montgomery Private Client Services Team with the M&A Team to deliver advice to clients before, during and after a liquidity event.  He also served as head of the corporate finance group at NationsBanc Capital Markets Inc., a predecessor to Banc of America Securities.  Stewart received his B.A. in Economics from Davidson College.

Mary Weeks Fountain

Mary Weeks Fountain, CFA ®, Managing Director

Mary Weeks Fountain, CFA®, Executive Director, joined Sterling Capital Management in 1985 and has investment experience since 1985.  Mary Weeks is a senior private client portfolio manager. Mary Weeks received her B.A. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She is a CFA® charterholder.

Donald M. Harris

Donald M. Harris, CFA ®, Managing Director

Donald M. Harris, CFA®, Managing Director, joined de Garmo & Kelleher in 1997 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in 2010.  He has investment experience since 1989.  Don leads the investment management team in the Washington, D.C. office of Sterling’s Private Client Group.  Prior to joining de Garmo & Kelleher, he worked for NationsBank Private Investments as vice president and portfolio manager managing assets for both individuals and non-profit organizations.  Don received his B.A. in Economics from Bucknell University and his M.B.A. in Finance in Investments from the George Washington University.  He is a CFA® charterholder and is a member of the CFA® Institute and CFA® Society of Washington, D.C.

Donald E. Strehle

Donald E. Strehle, Managing Director

Donald E. Strehle, Managing Director, joined Sterling Capital Management in 2013 and has investment experience since 1979.  Don is responsible for new business development and client service, and also has administrative responsibility for the Washington, D.C. office of Sterling’s Private Client Group.   Prior to joining Sterling, he was the BB&T regional president in the Northern Virginia area where he was responsible for the management of over 575 employees, 80 offices, $6 billion in deposits and 140,000 client households.  Prior to BB&T, he was executive vice president for F&M Bank-Northern Virginia.  Don received his B.A. in Business Management from Radford University.

C. Thomas Clapp

C. Thomas Clapp, CFA ®, Executive Director

C. Thomas Clapp, CFA®, Executive Director, joined Sterling Capital Management in 2006 and has investment experience since 1984 .  Tom is the chief investment officer for Sterling’s Private Client Group. Prior to joining Sterling, he worked for Wachovia Bank where he served as executive managing director and chief investment officer for the bank’s private asset management group.  Prior to Wachovia, he was responsible for the private portfolio group at Merrill Lynch Asset Management in Princeton.  He also held the position of chief investment officer for equity management at Banc of America Capital Management.  Tom received his B.A. in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his M.B.A. from the University of South Carolina.  He is a CFA® charterholder.  

Michael F. Kelleher

Michael F. Kelleher, CFA ®, Executive Director

Michael F. Kelleher, CFA®, Executive Director, co-founded de Garmo & Kelleher in 1990  and joined Sterling Capital Management through merger in 2010. He has investment experience since 1970.  Mike is a portfolio manager with Sterling's Private Client Group. Prior to joining de Garmo & Kelleher, he worked for Davidge & Company as senior manager and research director.  Mike received his A.B. from Holy Cross College and his M.B.A. from the University of Hartford.  He was previously a member of the adjunct faculty for the M.B.A. program at American University.  He is a CFA® charterholder and is a member of the CFA® Institute and CFA® Society of Washington, D.C., of which he is a past president.

Ellen Fishwick Martin

Ellen Fishwick Martin, Executive Director

Ellen Fishwick Martin, Executive Director, joined de Garmo & Kelleher in 1991 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in 2010.  She has investment experience since 1970.  Ellen is a portfolio manager with Sterling's Private Client Group. Prior to joining de Garmo & Kelleher, she served as vice president and senior investment officer of the Chevy Chase Trust Group.  Ellen received her B.A. in History from Wellesley College and of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University.  She is a member of the CFA® Institute and the CFA® Institute of Washington, D.C., of which she is a past president.

Brian E. Leach

Brian E. Leach, CFA ®, Director

Brian E. Leach, CFA®, Director, joined Sterling Capital Management in 2013 and has investment experience since 2001. Brian is a private client portfolio manager.  Prior to joining Sterling, he worked for Neville, Rodie & Shaw as vice president and portfolio manager for both individuals and non-profit organizations.  Brian received his B.A. in Public Policy Studies from Duke University.  He is a CFA® charterholder and is a member of the CFA® Institute and CFA® Society of Washington, D.C.

Scott  Eichelsdorfer

Scott Eichelsdorfer, Associate Director

Scott joined de Garmo & Kelleher in 2001 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in October 2010. He has investment experience since 1999. Scott is an Investment Associate with deGarmo & Kelleher, a division of Sterling Capital Management. Prior to joining de Garmo, he worked for Berg, Faircloth & Company. Scott is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he received his BA in Economics.

Kevin J. Runge

Kevin J. Runge, CFA, Associate Director

Kevin joined Sterling Capital Management in 2005. He has investment experience since 1999. Kevin is a Private Client Analyst. Prior to joining Sterling, he worked for Columbia Management Group and for Capital Guardian Trust Company. Kevin is a graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where he received his BSBA in Accounting and Finance with a minor in Economics. He is a CFA charterholder.

Jason L. Eddy

Jason L. Eddy, Associate Director

Jason joined Sterling Capital Management in 2015 and has investment experience since 2011. Jason is a private client systems analyst. Prior to joining Sterling, he worked as a senior operations specialist with Voya Investment Management and served as an investigator in the Department of Enforcement with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Jason received his B.S. in Finance from the University of Connecticut.

Viktoria  Droujinsky

Viktoria Droujinsky, Associate Director

Viktoria joined Sterling Capital Management in 2017. She has investment experience since 2010. Viktoria is a Portfolio Administrator and Business Manager for Sterling's Private Client Group located in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining Sterling, she was a multiple award winning employee for BB&T as an Area Operations Officer in the Greater Washington Community Bank. Viktoria received her B.A. in Business Administration from the College of the Ozarks, where she was a cum laude graduate.

James C. Willis

James C. Willis, CFA ®, Managing Director

James C. Willis, CFA , Managing Director, joined BB&T Asset Management in 2003 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in 2010. He has investment experience since 1996. As director of Advisory Solutions, Jim is responsible for investment manager search and selection and the oversight of Sterling s comprehensive open architecture platform. Jim received his B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Rice University and his M.B.A. from Georgetown University. He is a CFA charterholder.

Jeffrey J. Schappe

Jeffrey J. Schappe, CFA ®, Managing Director

Jeffrey J. Schappe, CFA , Managing Director, joined BB&T Asset Management in 2004 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in 2010. He has investment experience since 1991. As chief market strategist, Jeff chairs Sterling s Investment Committee and manages BB&T's Corporate Defined Benefit Pension Plan. Prior to joining BB&T, he served as CIO and portfolio manager at Citizens Advisers and as Director of Research and portfolio manager at Conseco Capital Management. Jeff received his B.A. in Journalism and his M.B.A. in Finance, Investments and Banking from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He is a CFA charterholder.

Kevin J. Stoll

Kevin J. Stoll, CFA ®, Managing Director

Kevin J. Stoll, CFA , Managing Director, first worked at Sterling Capital Management from 2004 to 2007 and rejoined the firm in 2013. He has investment experience since 1998. Kevin is head of quantitative research and is responsible for developing and applying quantitative analytics used in the investment and risk management process. Kevin also leads Sterling’s asset allocation process.  Prior to joining Sterling, he worked at Smith Breeden Associates where he was director of quantitative research and analytics. Kevin also has prior investment experience as an analyst at Jones Lang LaSalle. Kevin received his B.A. in Economics and Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences from Northwestern University and his M.B.A. from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. He is a CFA charterholder.  

L. Joshua Wein

L. Joshua Wein, CAIA ®, Executive Director

Joshua Wein, CAIA®, Executive Director, joined BB&T Asset Management in 2008 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in 2010.  He has investment experience since 1995. Josh is Director of Alternative Investments on Sterling’s Advisory Solutions team. Prior to joining BB&T, he worked as a managing member of Bellator Capital Partners, a long/short equity fund focused primarily on small and mid-cap equities.  He also worked as an equity research associate covering enterprise software companies at First Union Securities.  Josh received his B.B.A. in Finance from Emory University and his M.B.A. from Vanderbilt University. Josh is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst®.

 

Shane A. Burke

Shane A. Burke, Director

Shane A. Burke, Director, joined Sterling Capital Management in 2013 and has investment experience since 2002. Shane is a portfolio manager and investment analyst on Sterling s Advisory Solutions Team with a focus on fixed income and also serves as co-portfolio manager of the Sterling Capital Diversified Income Fund. Prior to joining Sterling, he worked as a senior analyst at New England Pension Consultants (NEPC) and as a portfolio accountant with State Street Corporation. Shane received his B.S. in Finance from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and his M.B.A. from San Francisco - Golden Gate University.

Brandon W. Carl

Brandon W. Carl, CFA ®, Director

Brandon W. Carl, CFA , Director, joined BB&T Asset Management in 2001 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in 2010. He has investment experience since 2001. Brandon is an investment analyst on Sterling s Advisory Solutions Team with a focus on developed markets equity and also serves as co-portfolio manager of the Sterling Capital Diversified Income Fund. Previously, he graduated from the BB&T Leadership Development Program and was an equity analyst covering the healthcare and consumer staples sectors for BB&T Asset Management. Brandon received his B.S. in Finance and Management from the University of South Carolina. He is a CFA charterholder.

Alex M. Harshberger

Alex M. Harshberger, ASA, Director

Alex M. Harshberger, ASA, Associate Director, joined Sterling Capital Management in 2016 and has investment experience since 2013.  Alex is a quantitative research analyst.  Prior to Sterling, she was a senior actuarial analyst with Willis Towers Watson.  Prior to Willis Towers Watson, she worked as a research assistant at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.  Alex received her B.S. in Mathematics and Economics from the University of Pittsburgh, where she was a summa cum laude graduate, and her M.Sc. in Economics from the University of Sussex.  She is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries.

J. Travis Pollack

J. Travis Pollack, CFA ®, Director

J. Travis Pollack, CFA®, Director, joined BB&T Asset Management in 2005 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in 2010.  He has investment experience since 2001.  Travis is an investment analyst on the Advisory Solutions Team responsible for coverage of Real Estate, Commodities, and MLP’s. He also supports the team with performance analytics and analysis.  Prior to joining BB&T, he worked for State Street Corporation as a senior mutual fund accountant.  Travis received his B.S. and M.B.A. from the University of South Carolina. He is a CFA® charterholder.

M. Davis Vaughan

M. Davis Vaughan, Associate Director

M. Davis Vaughan, Associate Director, joined Sterling Capital Management in 2018 and has investment experience since 2018. Davis is a quantitative research analyst. He received his B.S. in Mathematics for Business with concentrations in Actuarial Science and Finance as a Levine Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He received his M.S. in Mathematical Finance also from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Brittany L. Nona

Brittany L. Nona, Associate

Brittany L. Nona, Associate, joined Sterling Capital Management in 2015 and has investment experience since 2015. Brittany is a marketing analyst focusing on Advisory Solutions and Fixed Income SMAs. Prior to Sterling, she was a marketing specialist in the juvenile products industry. Brittany received her B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication and Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
