Our History


Sterling Capital Management LLC is a registered investment advisor founded in 1970. Sterling is dedicated to providing clients with outstanding service in achieving their investment goals. By delivering on this commitment, the firm has grown to serve many sophisticated individual and institutional investors.

With $55 billion in assets under management as of 12/31/2017, Sterling has the capabilities, credentials and focus designed to solve our clients’ most complex investment needs.

Sterling’s private client group originated from the firm’s success in serving sophisticated institutional investors. Our interaction with national and international consultants, corporations, foundations and Governmental pension plans has provided us experience and insight to better serve affluent individuals and families. The private client group was strengthened with the addition of Washington, D.C. based de Garmo & Kelleher in 2010. Our sole mission is to appropriately manage our clients’ assets to meet their goals and objectives.

Sterling is an independent subsidiary of BB&T Corporation, one of the nation's largest financial services holding companies.

Our headquarters are in Charlotte, N.C., with offices in Raleigh, N.C.; Atlanta, GA.; Washington, D.C.; Richmond, VA; Virginia Beach, VA; Philadelphia, PA and San Francisco, Calif.

Stewart M. Boswell

Stewart M. Boswell, Senior Managing Director & Group Head

Stewart joined Sterling Capital Management in 2009. He has investment experience since 1984. Stewart leads the Private Client Group. Prior to joining Sterling, he previously was founder and managing partner of Boswell Associates, a private equity firm based in Charlotte, NC. Prior to the formation of Boswell Associates, he served as Managing Director and Global Head of Middle Market Mergers and Acquisitions at Banc of America Securities. Before the formation of Banc of America Securities, he was responsible for Mergers & Acquisitions at its predecessor NationsBanc Montgomery Securities where he integrated the Montgomery Private Client Services team with the M&A team to deliver advice to clients before, during, and after a liquidity event. He also served as head of the corporate finance group at NationsBanc Capital Markets Inc., a predecessor to Banc of America Securities. Stewart is a graduate of Davidson College where he received his BA in Economics.

Donald M. Harris

Donald M. Harris, CFA, Managing Director

Don joined de Garmo & Kelleher in 1997 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in 2010. He has investment experience since 1989. Don leads the investment management team in the Washington D.C. office of Sterling's Private Client Group. Prior to de Garmo, he worked for NationsBank Private Investments as Vice President and Portfolio Manager managing assets for both individuals and non-profit organizations. Don is a graduate of Bucknell University where he received his BA in Economics. He received his MBA in Finance and Investments from The George Washington University. Don is a member of the CFA Institute and CFA Society of Washington, D.C. He is a CFA charterholder.

Donald E. Strehle

Donald E. Strehle, Managing Director

Don joined Sterling Capital Management in 2013. He has investment experience since 1996. Don is responsible for new business development and client service. He also has administrative responsibility for the Washington, D.C. office of Sterling's Private Client group. Prior to joining Sterling, he was most recently BB&T Regional President in the Northern Virginia area where he was responsible for the management of over 575 employees, 80 offices, $6 billion in deposits and 140,000 client households. Prior to BB&T, he was Executive Vice President for F&M Bank-Northern Virginia. Don is a graduate of Radford University where he received his BA in Business Management.

C. Thomas Clapp

C. Thomas Clapp, CFA, Executive Director & Private Client CIO

Tom joined Sterling Capital Management in 2006. He has investment experience since 1984. Tom is the Chief Investment Officer for Sterling's Private Client Group. Prior to joining Sterling, he worked for Wachovia Bank where he served for six years as Executive Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer for the bank's Private Asset Management Group. Prior to Wachovia, he was responsible for the Private Portfolio Group at Merrill Lynch Asset Management in Princeton, NJ. He also held the position of Chief Investment Officer for Equity Management at Banc of America Capital Management. Tom is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where he received his BA in Economics. He received his MBA from the University of South Carolina. He is a CFA charterholder.

Mary Weeks Fountain

Mary Weeks Fountain, CFA, Managing Director

Mary Weeks joined Sterling Capital Management in 1985. She has investment experience since 1985. Mary Weeks is a Senior Private Client Portfolio Manager. Mary Weeks is a graduate of University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where she received her BA in Chemistry. She is a CFA charterholder.

Michael Kelleher

Michael Kelleher, CFA, Executive Director & Senior Portfolio Manager

Mike joined Sterling Capital Management through merger in October 2010. He has investment experience since 1970. Mike, along with George de Garmo, founded de Garmo & Kelleher in 1990. Prior to de Garmo, he worked for Davidge & Company in positions of Senior Manager and Research Director. Mike is a graduate of Holy Cross College where he received his AB. He received his MBA from the University of Hartford. He is a member of the CFA Institute and CFA Society of Washington, D.C., of which he is a past president. Mike has been a member of the adjunct faculty for the MBA program at American University. He is a CFA charterholder.

Ellen Fishwick Martin

Ellen Fishwick Martin, Executive Director & Senior Portfolio Manager

Ellen joined de Garmo & Kelleher in 1991 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in 2010. She has investment experience since 1970. Prior to joining de Garmo, Ellen served as Vice President and Senior Investment Officer of the Chevy Chase Trust Group. Ellen is a graduate of Wellesley College where she received her BA in History. She holds a degree from the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University. She is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Washington, D.C., of which she is a past president.

Brian E. Leach

Brian E. Leach, CFA, Director & Portfolio Manager

Brian joined Sterling Capital Management in 2013. He has investment experience since 2001. Brian is a Private Client Portfolio Manager. Prior to joining Sterling, he worked for Neville, Rodie & Shaw, Inc. as Vice President and Portfolio Manager managing assets for both individuals and non-profit organizations. Brian is a graduate of Duke University where he received his BA in Public Policy Studies. He is a member of the CFA Institute and CFA Society of Washington, D.C. He is a CFA charterholder.

Scott Eichelsdorfer

Scott Eichelsdorfer, Associate Director

Scott joined de Garmo & Kelleher in 2001 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in October 2010. He has investment experience since 1999. Scott is an Investment Associate with deGarmo & Kelleher, a division of Sterling Capital Management. Prior to joining de Garmo, he worked for Berg, Faircloth & Company. Scott is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he received his BA in Economics.

Kevin J. Runge

Kevin J. Runge, CFA, Associate Director

Kevin joined Sterling Capital Management in 2005. He has investment experience since 1999. Kevin is a Private Client Analyst. Prior to joining Sterling, he worked for Columbia Management Group and for Capital Guardian Trust Company. Kevin is a graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where he received his BSBA in Accounting and Finance with a minor in Economics. He is a CFA charterholder.

Jason L. Eddy

Jason L. Eddy, Associate Director

Jason joined Sterling Capital Management in 2015 and has investment experience since 2011. Jason is a private client systems analyst. Prior to joining Sterling, he worked as a senior operations specialist with Voya Investment Management and served as an investigator in the Department of Enforcement with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Jason received his B.S. in Finance from the University of Connecticut.

Debra L. Ayers

Debra L. Ayers, Associate Director

Debbie joined Sterling Capital Management in 2010. She has investment experience since 1993. Debbie is a portfolio administrator with Sterling’s Private Client Group. Prior to joining Sterling, she worked for Eastover Capital Management and for Wachovia Bank. Debbie is a graduate of High Point University where she received her B.S. in Business Administration.

Viktoria Droujinsky

Viktoria Droujinsky, Associate Director

Viktoria joined Sterling Capital Management in 2017. She has investment experience since 2010. Viktoria is a Portfolio Administrator and Business Manager for Sterling's Private Client Group located in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining Sterling, she was a multiple award winning employee for BB&T as an Area Operations Officer in the Greater Washington Community Bank. Viktoria received her B.A. in Business Administration from the College of the Ozarks, where she was a cum laude graduate.

Jeffrey J. Schappe

Jeffrey J. Schappe, CFA, Managing Director & Chief Market Strategist

Jeff joined BB&T Asset Management in 2004 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in October 2010. He has research and investment experience since 1991. As Chief Market Strategist, Jeff is responsible for strategic and tactical asset allocation for Sterling's Advisory Solutions team. Prior to joining BB&T, he served as CIO and portfolio manager at Citizens Advisers and as Director of Research and portfolio manager at Conseco Capital Management. Jeff is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received his BA in Journalism and an MBA in Finance, Investments and Banking. He is a CFA charterholder.

James C. Willis

James C. Willis, CFA, Managing Director

Jim joined BB&T Asset Management in 2003 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in October 2010. He has investment experience since 1996. As Director of Advisory Solutions, Jim is responsible for investment manager search and selection and the oversight of Sterling's comprehensive open architecture platform. Jim is a graduate of Rice University where he received his BA in Economics and Political Science. He received his MBA from Georgetown University. He is a CFA charterholder.

Kevin J. Stoll

Kevin J. Stoll, CFA, Executive Director

Kevin joined Sterling Capital Management in 2013 and has investment experience since 1998. Kevin is head of quantitative research and is responsible for developing quantitative analytics used in the investment and risk management process. Prior to joining Sterling, he worked at Smith Breeden Associates where he was director of quantitative research and analytics. Prior to Smith Breeden, he was an analyst with Sterling’s Fixed Income Team. Kevin received his B.A. in Economics and Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences from Northwestern University and his M.B.A. from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. He is a CFA® charterholder.

Brandon W. Carl

Brandon W. Carl, CFA, Director

Brandon joined BB&T Asset Management in 2001 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in October 2010. He has investment experience since 2001. Brandon is an investment analyst with Sterling's Advisory Solutions team with a focus on global equity. He graduated from the BB&T Leadership Development Program and was an equity analyst for BB&T Asset Management with a primary focus on the health care and consumer staples sectors. Brandon is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he received his BS in Finance and Management. He is a CFA charterholder.

L. Joshua Wein

L. Joshua Wein, CAIA, Director

Josh joined BB&T Asset Management in 2008 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in October 2010. He has investment experience since 1995. Josh is an investment analyst with Sterling's Advisory Solutions team with a focus on alternative investments and also serves as Co-Portfolio Manager of the Sterling Capital Long/Short Equity Fund. Prior to joining BB&T, he worked as a Managing Member of Bellator Capital Partners, a long/short equity fund focused primarily on small and mid-cap equities. He also worked as an Equity Research Associate covering enterprise software companies at First Union Securities. Josh is a graduate of Emory University where he received his BBA in Finance. He received his MBA from Vanderbilt University. He is a CAIA charterholder.

Shane A. Burke

Shane A. Burke, Associate Director

Shane joined Sterling Capital Management in 2013. He has investment experience since 2002. Shane is an investment analyst with Sterling's Advisory Solutions team with a focus on fixed income. Prior to joining Sterling, he worked as a senior analyst at New England Pension Consultants (NEPC) and as a portfolio accountant with State Street Corporation. Shane is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where he received his BS in Finance. He received his MBA from San Francisco-Golden Gate University.

J. Travis Pollack

J. Travis Pollack, CFA, Associate Director

Travis joined BB&T Asset Management in 2005 and Sterling Capital Management through merger in October 2010. He has investment experience since 2001. Travis is an Investment Analyst responsible for coverage of Real Estate, Commodities, and MLP’s. He also supports the team with performance analytics and analysis. Prior to joining BB&T, he worked for State Street Corporation as a Senior Mutual Fund Accountant. Travis is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he received both his BS and MBA degrees. He is a CFA charterholder.

Alex M. Harshberger

Alex M. Harshberger, Associate Director

Alex joined Sterling Capital Management in 2016 and has investment experience since 2013. Alex is a quantitative research analyst. Prior to Sterling, she was a senior actuarial analyst with Willis Towers Watson. Prior to Willis Towers Watson, she worked as a research assistant at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Alex received her B.S. in Mathematics and Economics from the University of Pittsburgh, where she was a summa cum laude graduate, and her M.Sc. in Economics from the University of Sussex.

Brittany L. Nona

Brittany L. Nona, Associate

Brittany joined Sterling Capital Management in 2015 and has investment experience since 2015. Brittany is a marketing analyst focusing on Advisory Solutions and Fixed Income SMAs. Prior to Sterling, she was a marketing specialist in the juvenile products industry. Brittany received her B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication and Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
